Exchanging expertice on disabilities

With support from Norway, The Cyprus Red Cross Society hosted in February a three day seminar on “Communication, Learning and Quality of Life” in Limassol.

The seminar focused on the possibilities and challenges for children and youth with severe and profound disabilities and their caregivers.
– Teachers from public schools are represented, and after being here today they can go back to their school and teach what they have learned, said Director General Takis Neophytou

Norwegian Representation
The Norwegian Ambassador to Greece and Cyprus, Sverre Stub, held an opening speech where he stressed the importance of the work being done for children with disabilities and Norway’s commitment to help.
Norway was also represented with expertise in the area. Knut Slåtta and Mette Løvås from The Torshov Resource Center in Oslo participated and shared their expertise and experience with the Cypriot teachers and parents etc.
– The cooperation with the Torshov Resource Center has been very helpful. In Cyprus we have much to learn from the Scandinavian countries and their approach to these kind of challenges, said Neophytou.
The two countries have much to learn from each other, and he hopes for more cooperation between the Torshov Resource Center and the Cypriot Red Cross in the future.
This summer we are going to Norway to learn more, said Neophytou.

Moved to the South
The Cyprus Red Cross Home for Sick Children opened in 1957, in Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus. Due to the invasion in 1974 they had to move. Today the center is in Limassol, and after more than 50 years the house continues to operate.

The Red Cross Home provides care for 76 children aged 0-21 years, suffering from serious physical disabilities. The services provided at the Home are constantly being upgraded. More specialized medical services become available on a regular basis.

Norway supports the project through the EEA-grants and Norway Grants.
