Thalassocosmos Cretaquarium

The Thalassocosmos Cretaquarium in Gournes, Crete was officially opened in July 2006. The project is one of 29 projects in Greece funded under the EEA Financial Mechanism 1994-1998 (mostly financed by Norway). The aquarium was already open to the public in December 2005, and became an immediate success with more than 100,000 visitors having passed through its doors since then. Enjoy a visit to the aquarium during your stay in Crete this summer.

With a total investment of almost nine milllion euro, the project has seen the construction of a state-of-the-art sea water aquarium designed for research, educational and tourism purposes.

The project`s excellent ability to cater for the diverse needs of a modern aquarium-access to the public, education, tourism and marine research-has turned the Cretaquarium into a truly multi-purpose facilitiy. The project`s immediate success is evidenced by more than 100, 000 visitors since its opening 17 December 2005.

The aquarium is administrated by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, and it is located in Gournes, 15 km outside Herakleion.

Open Monday-Sunday, 1/5-31/10: 9-21 and 1/11-30/4: 10-17.30
