Geirr Tveitt (1908 -1981)
2008 marks the 100 year anniversary for the birth of the Norwegian pianist and composer. Educated in Leipzig, as did Edvard Grieg, Tveitt is colorful and productive. Tveitt’s music is positioned between Norwegian folk music and a sophisticated post-impressionistic style. He made both operahs and symphonies, but is also known for his traditional folk songs.
Edvard Grieg (1843-1907)
Edvard Grieg is the most important Norwegian composer of the later 19th century, a period of growing national consiousness. His work, inspired by Norwegian folk music, established him as a leading figure worldwide. He is best known for his Piano Concert in A minor, for his incidental music to Henrik Ibsen’s play “Peer Gynt” and his collection of piano miniatures “Lyric Peaces”.
Halfdan Kjerulf (1815-1868)
Son of a high government official, Halfdan Kjerulf studied law and later took a job as editor at one of Oslo’s main newspapers. Only after 1845 did he start his career as a music teacher and composer of songs, before ever having studied music at all. His fame rests almost entirely on his beautiful and manly national partsongs and solos, although his pianoforte music is equally charming.
