Norwegian folktales in Athens

The Norwegian storytellers Sara Birgitte Øfsti and Torgrim Mellum Stene will participate when the 2nd Storytelling Festival takes place in Athens in December. A part of the festival will be “A tribute to Norway”, a country rich on narrative traditions, folktales and myths.


December 10-11, The Center for Study and Dissemination of Myths and Folktales is organizing a storytelling festival in Athens. Birgitte Øfsti and Torgrim Mellum Stene from Norway will perform on December 10th at the Pottery Museum and at the Scandinavian Church in Plaka.

“Shaping stories” – an experimental workshop

Inspired by the aura and the magic of the Norwegian myths and fairytales, storytellers Torgrim Mellum Stene and Sara Birgitte Øfsti will show us how to weave stories and how to improvise on them through an experimental workshop. The workshop will be held in English and you don't need any prior experience to participate.

Norwegian fairytales at the Scandinavian Church

On the same day, all Norwegian speakers in Athens are invited to listen to Torgrim Mellum Stene and Sara Birgitte Øfsti narrate traditional Norwegian folktales at the Scandinavian Church in Plaka. The audience will  have the pleasure of experiencing both known and less known Norwegian tales. Amongst these are ”De sju folene” and "et gammel tradisjonelt folkeeventyr fra Asbjørnsen og Moe om to brødre, en magisk håndkvern og masser av grøt." 

Time and place: Daidalou 18 in Plaka from 17:00 -18:00. Free admission

Performances at the Pottery Museum

Later on December 10th, Torgrim Mellum Stene and Sara Birgitte Øfsti will both give English performances based on Norwegian traditional tales.

From 20:30, Øfsti will perform the “The Troll without a heart” welcoming adults and kids alike. At 21:30, Torgrim Mellum Stene will perform “Chasing the Phoenix”. This performance is only open to adults.  Both of the performances are at the Pottery Museum and cost 8 Euros. (Students and unemployed: 6 Euros). If you want to attend both, the admission fee is 13 Euros. (Students and employees: 10 Euros.)

Activities in Oslo

Also in Oslo, there will be activities connected to the Storytelling Festival. With the purpose to exchange knowledge between the two countries, The Center for Study and Dissemination of Myths and Folktales have asked narrator and Professor at The University of Oslo, Heidi Dahlsveen, to talk about her experience as a participant at the Fairytale Festival of Kea. The event in Oslo is organized by the South Aegean Region and will take place on December 2.
