Ibsen at the National Theatre

Ibsen's "The Lady from the sea" will have its premiere at the National Theatre on February 19.

The Lady from the sea will be performed in the newly restored Ziller Building at The National Theatre in Athens. The play is considered to be one of Ibsen’s most lyrical, hopeful and rarely performed plays. It is a work with all the characteristics that make the writing of the great Norwegian realist unique: an exhaustive analysis of the thoughts and mental states of the main characters, an imposing atmosphere, and perennial questions about human relations.

The play will be directed by the critically acclaimed Eirik Stubø. Previously he has been the theatre director at the National Theatre in Oslo from 2000 to 2008. Stubø is also an expert on the work of Ibsen.  He received the “Of-Broadway Theater Award” for his production of Ibsen's play The Wild Duck, shown in New York in 2006. Additionally he is in the committee for “The International Ibsen Award”.  Responsible for the scene and costumes will be fellow Norwegian Kari Gravklev. She has more than 350 opera and theater productions to her credit, and designed the costumes to 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics. The play is financed with the support of the Norwegian Embassy.
