A lecure by Associate Professor Ingvar Mæhle titled "Athens, Sparta and Rome compared. The importance of ideology" will be held at the Norwegian Institute at Tuesday September 27th at 19:30.
The Athenians, Spartans and Romans all developed different institutional solutions to the political conflicts of the Archaic Age. Whereas the Athenians created a democracy, the Romans experimented in competitive oligarchy, and the Spartans invented the first totalitarian state. Was differing ideologies the cause of, or the result of these developments? Or was the birth of the idea and the phenomenon in some way simultaneous and interrelated?
