Norwegian scientist honoured in Athens

Professor Ivar Isaksen declared Honorary Doctor at the University of Athens for his outstanding work on climate change

In a ceremony on 29 January, Norwegian scientist Ivar Isaksen was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of the Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

The initiative to honour Ivar Isaksen was taken by Academician Christos Zerefos, Professor at the Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment, and Dr. Asimakopoulos, Vice Rector and Professor of Environmental Physics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Professor Isaksen was honoured for his long time valuable scientific work, in particular in identifying impacts of various gas emissions on global climate.

Ivar Isaksen is Professor at the University of Oslo, Department of Geosciences and Meteorology. He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters, and one of the expert contributors to the scientific reports on Climate Change by IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 toghether with Al Gore.  Professor Zerefos was one of two Greek scientists who were acknowledged by  IPCC-Chairman Pachauri as joint winners of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

Isaksen has carried out several projects funded by the Research Council of Norway and the EU Framework Programs, and is currently a researcher at Cicero, the Center for International Climate and Environmental Research Oslo.
