The Institute where Øystein works.

The Norwegian student Øystein Brekk will spend the next years in Athens, doing research on Parkinson`s Disease for his PhD. Øystein is a part of the PhD fellowship “Marie Curie Actions Training Network”, which provides training and research experience for researchers of any age or nationality. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2011 is to be divided equally between Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee and Tawakkul Karman.

On Saturday 1 October, over 70 people attended the conference entitled “Child Safety in the Car – Bonding in the Family. Raising a Baby in Scandinavia and in Greece” which was hosted by the Norwegian Embassy and the two Norwegian companies Stokke and BeSafe. The Norwegian Ambassador to Greece opened the conference. Nearly 12 000 foreign nationals are studying at Norwegian institutions of higher education. The Greek student Argiro Roinioti spent a year at the University NTNU in Trondheim to work on her master thesis. -If you like nature, skiing, hiking and snow, then Trondheim is your city! Eidsvoll in Norway - Where the Norwegian constitution was written and signed on May 17th 1814

Municipal elections were held in Norway on September 12, deciding councils in municipalities and counties throughout the nation. And although local elections in Norway do not necessarily have a major impact on national government policy, they give an important indication of what kind of politics Norwegian citizens want in their home region. The ceremony was broadcast live on national television and the name of each victim was read out loud at the candle-lit stage of Oslo Spektrum. The stage was decorated with 77 candles, one for each person who lost his or her life.

To honor the victims of the Oslo and Utøya attacks, a National Memorial Ceremony was held on August 21st. Prime Minister Stoltenberg underlined in his speech: "No matter where you live, no matter which God you worship, each and every one of us can take responsibility and can guard freedom”. Read more

Friends of the Earth Norway, Forum for Environment and Development (ForUM) and the company Cermaq ASA have agreed on a Joint Statement on the foundation for sustainable aquaculture. The statement concludes a more than two years old complaint on Norwegian fish farming activities in Chile and Canada. Read more

In view of the first year implementation of the IB Diploma Programme at Platon School in Athens, a 50% tuition discount is offered to the first Norwegian student who wishes to attend the programme in the 2011 - 2012 academic year. The 39th Norway Cup has started in Oslo. 1,400 teams comprising of 30,000 participants from 51 nations will the next seven days participate in the largest youth and development tournament in the world. With last weekend’s terror attacks in mind, the tournament will more than ever be an important meeting place for unity and fellowship. Read more

In his address at the Oslo Cathedral today Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg opened: "It is nearly two days since Norway was hit by the worst atrocity it has seen since the Second World War. On Utøya, and in Oslo. It seems like an eternity. These have been hours, days and nights filled with shock, despair, anger and weeping." Read more
